Schools, education and childcare Understanding Ofsted grades

Many parents and carers consider a provider's Ofsted rating when choosing childcare. While an inspection report is only one source of information, it can provide a useful insight into the quality of a setting.

Watch the Ofstednews video below to learn more about Ofsted report cards, how grades are awarded and what they mean.

Not all childcare providers have been inspected under Ofsted's current reporting system. Some providers may still display an overall judgement from a previous inspection, while others will have a report card showing grades across different areas of provision.

Providers inspected under the current framework receive a report card that shows grades across different areas, including;

  • achievement,
  • inclusion,
  • behaviour
  • and wellbeing.

Please note: The old and new Ofsted reporting systems are different and should not be compared directly.
