Schools, education and childcare Why regular attendance matters

Regular attendance at nursery or other early years settings gives children the best opportunity to learn, develop and thrive. Children who attend regularly are more likely to:

  • Build strong relationships with staff and other children.
  • Develop confidence, independence and social skills.
  • Strengthen their language, communication and physical development.
  • Benefit from activities that support early maths, literacy and school readiness.
  • Establish positive routines that prepare them for starting school.

Missing sessions can disrupt learning and make it harder for children to maintain friendships and keep up with new experiences and activities.

Supporting your child's attendance

You can help your child get the most from their early education by:

  • Attending every funded session whenever possible.
  • Arriving on time so your child can take part in the full session.
  • Establishing regular home routines to support attendance.
  • Keeping in touch with your provider if your child is unwell or unable to attend.
  • Asking for support if attendance is becoming difficult.
