The Council and democracy Our budget 2026/27

Extra funding to build back and protecting services

Manchester’s always prided itself on free community events like firework displays and bonfires in our parks. This budget means some old favourites can return by popular demand.

As well as putting extra resources into residents’ priorities, this budget lets us review services and work with partners to jointly develop new ways of doing things – such as prevention and early help, giving families strengths and self-reliance so they can build better lives for themselves, and reducing the need for more costly support in future.

Value for money and service transformation will not just reduce and avoid cuts but also make sure we invest every pound in front line services more effectively.

Additional funding in this budget brings the greatest possible benefit to residents and improves overall quality of life. It improves service delivery and puts resources where they’ll have most impact in communities. It’s the start of building back and protecting front line service standards.

Extra investment in transforming Manchester people’s priority services totalling over £11million in 2026/27, and more in coming years, will support this:

  • £5.1m on more street cleaning.
  • £1m tackling fly tipping, litter and on better waste collection.
  • £1.5m boosting sport and leisure like free swimming for under-16s and over-60s.
