Gender Identity

Gender identity refers to a person's sense of their own gender and may differ from the sex registered at their birth.

Across England and Wales, the gender identity of 93.5% of those aged 16 and over is the same as registered at their birth (45.5 million people), and the gender identity of 0.5% differs (262,000 people). The remaining 6% did not answer (2.9 million people).
