Training to become a teacher

There’s more than one way to become a teacher. Whether you want to study at university, train in a school, or earn while you learn — find the route that works for you.

Ways to train

Teach First

Get paid while you train in schools that need you most. Teach First is a fully funded programme that lets you earn a salary and gain QTS while making a real difference.

  • Perfect for career changers or graduates who want to start fast.
  • Includes mentoring and leadership development.

School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT)

Train in a school from day one. SCITT courses are run by schools and give you hands-on experience with expert support.

  • You’ll learn on the job while working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Ideal if you want to be in the classroom straight away.

Apprenticeships

Earn while you learn with a teacher degree apprenticeship. You’ll work in a school, get paid, and study towards a degree and QTS at the same time.

  • Great for people who want to avoid student debt.
  • Combines practical experience with academic study.
