LGBT History

The history of Manchester's LBGT community is an important part of the social and cultural history of the city and the North West. The city has the United Kingdom's largest LGBT community outside London and is renowned for its Gay Village centred around Canal Street.

Manchester is the home of festivals such as Pride and queerupnorth, and the Lesbian and Gay Foundation, the UK's biggest LGBT charity, is based on Richmond Street. In addition Manchester has played an important role in the struggle against prejudice and homophobia and it is the birthplace of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality.

The LGBT source guide is an introduction to archive and printed material held in the Greater Manchester area relating to the history of Manchester's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community.
