Books
The Manchester Room@City Library holds a large collection of printed material about the City of Manchester and its region, although we mainly concentrate on the city itself. From its origins as a Roman settlement to the medieval market town, through its important role during the industrial revolution, its development as a transport centre and inland port, and its present status as a centre of cultural and sporting excellence, Manchester has always played an important role in the history of England. All aspects of its emergence into the great city that we know today are covered. We have compiled some introductory booklists for people unfamiliar with the history of our city:

Newspapers
The following newspapers are available on-line:
- Manchester Guardian 1821-2000 and the Observer 1791-2000 are available on our 24 Hour Library.
- Manchester Evening News 1868-1903, Manchester Courier 1825-1916, Manchester Mercury 1752-1830 and Manchester Times 1828-1900 is available on the British Newspapers Archive. Unfortunately we do not have a subscription to this service.
- Manchester Evening News 2001-current is available via Newsbank on our 24 Hour Library.
- The Times Digital Archive is available on our 24 Hour Library.
