Fine Food Market gives a taste of the region

28 September 2007

Rick Stein’s food heroes will be taking part in the Manchester Fine Food Market in St Ann’s Square from October 3 to 14.

John Tiscornia, who runs Demels in Ulverston, Cumbria was championed by the TV, seafood chef when he travelled the country searching for great local produce.

One of Demel's recipes a Sri Lankan Fish Curry has made an entry in Rick Stein's cookery books and as John said: "Last time I saw Rick Stein he said he was keeping my chutney in his kitchen."

With great combinations such as Date and Lime chutney as well as a selection of curry powders the award-winning Sri Lankan foods are made in small amounts to keep their piquancy.

Barry Pilkington runs Knight of the Black Pudding and is also another of Rick Stein's heroes who will be trading his wares.

All the traders, who will be there from 10am until 6pm, have something unique to offer and are food heroes in their own right. John Wood of Paradise Brewery will be selling his real ale brewed in North Wales. With a Mild, Farmers' Favourite, Golden Lion and the strongest Nantwich Ale at five per cent, there 's plenty for all ale lovers to try.

The Fine Food Market brings first-rate local produce to customers in Manchester. Everything from locally farmed meats and smoked cheese to home made fudge will be available.

Manchester Markets aim to bring a variety of the best foods farmed and produced in the north west into the city as well as helping small food businesses develop, by offering them the opportunity to trade in central Manchester.

Councillor Eddy Newman, Executive Member for Manchester Markets, said: "The Fine Food Market has excellent quality goods, local produce and a real selection of treats. This is also about educating people about the fantastic food in the north west and how we can support it, cut down food miles and celebrate what is on our doorstep!"

Head of Manchester Markets, Krys Zasada, said: "There will be plenty of things for shoppers to try and it is also a great place to buy lunch. Manchester Markets are working to make good food available throughout the year. We hope that the Fine Food market helps people rediscover the region's delicacies."
