Manchester City Council has announced the second wave of roads and pavements to be repaired through its five-year, £100m Highways Investment Programme.
In the first phase of the programme, nearly 700 roads were repaired. Now, a further list of around 500 roads which will be fixed by 2020 has been published in a report to the council's Executive.
Hundreds of pavements and drainage gullies will also be repaired as part of the maintenance programme.
All of the city’s roads have been surveyed by engineers and those assessed as being in the most need of repair are being tackled as a priority. Repair work will be concentrated in different areas of the city at different times, to minimise disruption for residents and motorists.
The report lists 487 roads which will be repaired. In some cases, the road will receive a new surface, while in others, the existing surface will be treated. Resealing a road's surface prevents the water damage which causes potholes and can extend its life by up to 20 years.
Around £1.5m is also being invested in repairing drainage gullies and pipework, which will help to prevent potholes by reducing the levels of water damage suffered by roads.
Work will be undertaken in all of Manchester's wards during the five-year scheme, with residents informed in advance of all maintenance scheduled to take place in their area.
Executive Member for the Environment and Skills, Councillor Angeliki Stogia, said: “We’ve listened to residents’ concerns about potholes and are investing in this major programme of work to make sure that our roads get better and stay better.
“Our Highways Investment Programme is a project for the long-term benefit of the city and while hundreds of roads have already been fixed, we’re still in the early stages, with much more work to do. However, we are determined to reduce the blight of potholes and will continue to repair hundreds more roads right across Manchester in the coming years."
