What's available
Although no book has been written on the efforts made to help these refugees, there is coverage in Box 540 of the newspaper cuttings series, and there are references in the Manchester City Council Proceedings of 1956 to 1957 (pages 1764 to 1772) and 1957 to 1958 (pages 1626 to 1633).
Around 800 refugees were housed at Styal Cottage Homes between 1956 to 1958. Reference to this made in the Council Proceedings for 1956 to 1957, 1957 to 1958 (mentioned previously). It is also mentioned in Tony Kushner, Remembering Refugees Then and Now (University of Manchester, 2006), pp.62-70, of which we hold a reference copy (325 21 KUS(835))
Brief mention is also made in:
- James Stanhope-Brown, A Styal of its Own 1894 to 1964 (C. Pothecary, c1989) (362.732 St)
- W. Crawford, 'A Cosmopolitan City' pp.120 to 121 in Rich Inheritance: a Guide to the History of Manchester (Manchester Education Committee; Manchester Teachers, 1962), edited by N. J. Frangopulo (942.73 Fr)
