We want our residents to live in the homes they want and need.
Our new Housing Strategy explains how we will go about making that happen and how this supports the delivery of the Our Manchester Strategy, its contribution to the economic recovery of the city, and our ambitions towards zero-carbon.
The past two decades have seen Manchester undergo a period of huge growth, leading to more people choosing to live and work in our city meaning the demand for homes is greater than ever. To meet this demand we are building more new properties than at any time since 2008, creating new and diverse neighbourhoods.
However, even more are needed, which is why this strategy sets a target of delivering 36,000 new homes by 2032. Just under a third of these (10,000 over the next ten years) will be affordable – with as many social rented homes as possible. The increasing cost of living has meant affordability has become even more of a challenge. We have launched the Manchester Living Rent and are committed to understanding how much of the city is affordable to who, so that we can continue to target our resources at those residents who need our support the most.
This strategy sets out our long-term vision to deliver the homes that people want and need. It is built around the following four vision principles:
- Increase affordable housing supply and build more new homes for all residents.
- Work to end homelessness and ensure housing is affordable and accessible to all.
- Address inequalities and create neighbourhoods where people want to live.
- Address the sustainability and zero-carbon challenges in new and existing housing.
