Children

  1. Standards information

    1. When attending our markets children must always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Children under 18 years old are not permitted onto the New Smithfield Wholesale Market site at any time from Monday to Saturday. Children are not allowed into any restricted market areas.
    2. The youngest age a child can work part-time is 13 years. Children are only allowed to work a set number of hours, and only between 7am and 7pm. You must have a permit before hiring a child aged between 13 and 16 years old, including family members. A permit is required regardless of whether they will be paid a wage. You must apply for a permit at least 21 days in advance. Find more information and apply for a free permit online. Before a child can start work you must complete a risk assessment.
