Ancoats and Beswick

  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and biodiversity:

    • To identify and enhance the Lower Medlock Valley with a minimum of one wildflower area by end of August 2024
    • Identify one location in Ancoats and Beswick to host a community fruit orchard by end of March 2024

    Young people:

    • Lead and deliver a minimum of one climate change workshop to young people/school group by Spring 2024
    • Deliver a minimum of one climate change assembly to an Ancoats and Beswick school by June 2024
    • Promotion of the Green Schools Network with Ancoats and Beswick schools that are not already engaged and active. The Network aims to support and accelerate climate action in education settings across North Manchester (ongoing)

    Transport, active travel, air quality:

    • Establish a Beswick program to engage residents with active travel groups and commission a  minimum of two ecology-focused guided walks with the group by December 2024
    • Deliver a minimum of one community road closure event each year in the ward

    Things we buy, use and bin:

    • Pilot Refill (reducing single-use plastics use) campaign in Ancoats and Beswick and sign up a  minimum of 15 new businesses by end of April 2024
    • Support and deliver a minimum of one community clothes swap event each year

    Food:

    • Facilitate the transfer of surplus food from supermarkets in the local area into one local community grocers on an ongoing basis 
    • Design and produce 200 vegetarian soup making kits and distribute by the end of December 2024

    Homes and energy efficiency:

    • Distribute 200 winter warmer/energy saving kits by end of December 2024
    • Organise and facilitate a minimum of one community information events for partner organisations to host advice stalls ie, debt advice, switching energy providers and distribution of LED light bulbs. By end of March 2024.

    Engagement, raising awareness, influencing change:

    • Fund a minimum of one community-led, climate change Neighbourhood Investment project each financial year
    • Dedicate one standing item to climate change information, advice and local activity in every issue of Step Up newsletter
    • Circulate and promote the Manchester Climate Change Agency’s 15 actions to become a zero carbon city to all Ancoats and Beswick community groups December 2023.

  2. Who else is involved, and what they're doing

    In Our Nature:

    Lead partner: Manchester Climate Change Agency. 
    In Our Nature is a programme in partnership between Manchester Climate Change Agency, Hubbub, Groundwork Greater Manchester, Amity, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Research and Manchester City Council. Between now and 2025 we’ll be working with communities across the city to connect the climate crisis to practical actions we can all take to make a difference, reduce our carbon emissions, save money, and learn something new too.

     

    Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund Project (SHDF):

    Led by MCC Zero Housing Carbon Team - Strategic Housing, with Forever Consulting, GMCA, DESNZ
    SHDF is a Government funded programme for improving the energy efficiency of fuel poor, poorly insulated social housing. MCC has been successful in securing funding to deliver retrofit works across 1600+ Council properties across the city, improving them up to an EPC rating of C over the next 2 years.
