  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and biodiversity:

    • Grey to Green Spaces: develop, support and promote alley-greening projects such as Bibby Lane, including cleaning and greening, reducing fly tipping and improving recycling
    • Support for our natural green assets - work with Friends of Cringle Park and Fields, and Manchester City Council's Parks Team to ensure green areas are improved and maintained to a high standard
    • Where required, and wherever possible, consider any support to Ladybarn and Fog Lane Friends of Parks Groups. 

    Young people:

    • Target 23/24 - Arrange a road closure for an Active Street event in partnership with Westcroft Community Centre during the year for young people and families.  Include climate change activity to raise awareness and promote key steps everyone can take to reduce their carbon footprint.
    • Work with Burnage Academy for Boys, Levenshulme High School for Girls, Green End Road Primary School, St Bernard’s RC Primary School, Cringle Brook Primary School and Acacias Community Primary School on Active Travel Plans encouraging parents and young people to walk, cycle and use public transport.
      • Encourage involvement in the Green School Network led by the Education Climate Lead. 
    • Continue to support Acacias Primary School with school streets pilots and their Junior PCSO Scheme.
    • Work in partnership with Burnage Library during story times and class visits to include climate conversations with young people.
    • Encourage participation in the Trees for Learning Programme – City of Trees. Explore potential to create better greener spaces
    • Work with schools to encourage recycling of uniforms and shoes
    • Promote school trips to Longley Lane Recycling Centre.
    • Continue to explore opportunities for air quality monitoring at local schools.

    Transport, active travel, air quality:

    Continue to promote relevant campaigns to provide opportunities to take action. Target 23/24:

    • Explore potential for a clean air activity including action to discourage anti idling. Include comms messaging to further promote and encourage behaviour which contributes to cleaner air.
    • Install anti-idling signs at Acacias and Cringle Brook Primary Schools and Avon Road.
    • Work with Food Bank at St Nicholas Church to organise events focussing on Active Travel and encourage cycling. 

    Things we buy, use and bin:

    Continue to drive sustainability and encourage behaviour change with regard to the things we buy and throw away.

    • Sustainable fashion
      • Hold an event to encourage residents to recycle clothes, alternatively to swap, repair or upcycle in order to keep them in use.
    • Waste Management
      • Work in partnership with Biffa to engage with residents to provide education and support about recycling.  
      • Promote days of action to support recycling, improve waste management and cleaner streets eg. Great British Spring Clean and Keep Britain Tidy.
      • Promote Sandfold Lane Recycling Centre to encourage residents and students in the ward to recycle more.
      • Promote Manchester Refill for ideas on reducing packaging waste
        • Work to increase the number of local businesses signed up to the Refill campaign  
        • Promote to community groups and residents encouraging them to download the app and refill on the go thereby avoid unnecessary packaging

    Food:

    • Ensure all catered events hosted throughout the year use low carbon options and do not include avoidable single use plastics.
    • Promote any relevant funding to:
      • help community groups such as Burnage Good Neighbours, Friends of Burnage Library, Acorn Close Allotments to increase food planting at their premises.
      • Promote and support the work of local food banks, charities and groups to reduce food waste. Target 2023/24: Hold event with smoothie bike to demonstrate options (and flavours) to help reduce food waste.

    Homes and energy efficiency:

    Continue to promote energy efficiency when engaging. Target 2023/24: Host at least one event in the year focused on energy efficiency for residents.

    • Work in partnership with Energy Buddies and Green Doctor to provide a range of support to save energy.
    • For practical application of energy efficiency and where appropriate, provid LED light bulbs at community events to help make homes more energy efficient also helping to save residents money.
    • Support the new carbon improvement works and installation of new boiler at Burnage Library.
    • Provide any support to Southway Housing to help with the roll out of additional investment in Burnage homes to make them lower carbon and more energy efficient.

    Engagement, raising awareness, influencing change:

    • Continue engagement across the ward raising awareness and influencing (behaviour) change. Identify any opportunities to work with faith groups in the ward to help raise awareness.
    • Funding:
      • Promote relevant funding streams to support climate related projects eg The Beautiful South.  
      • Neighbourhood Investment Fund (NIF): Ensure the ward budget is used to support bids/ Projects taking climate action.  Target 2023/24 Hold a Climate Dragon’s Den Event to encourage residents to apply for funding to deliver climate related projects.     
    • Ensure engagement takes place with local businesses including around the Manchester Refill campaign.
    • Work with MCC colleagues and Manchester Student Homes in relation to areas with a higher student population, promoting key messages during student return and move out particularly with a view to waste management. Target areas: Door to door visits to properties on Monica Grove, Fortuna Grove and Edenhall Avenue

  2. Who else is involved, and what they're doing

    Social Housing Decarbonisation Funded Programme:

    Led by Southway Housing with Cara EPS. A retrofit programme improving energy performance of 1112 homes across South Manchester, of which 442 are in Burnage. Measures include, loft and cavity wall insulation, low energy lighting and solar panels.


    Sofra MCR CIC – Dahlia House Café:

    Led by Southway Housing Sustainable Sourcing. Plant-based menu options and food-waste avoidance. Reusable  serveware, renewable energy.


    Acacias Community Primary School SAMHE project:

    Air Quality Monitoring of school streets and Junior PCSO Scheme. Led by Scientists from six national institutions; supported by DfE. The school will receive a free monitor, view data on air quality in their classroom and have access to a range of related activities.


    Green Home Finance Accelerator:

    Led by Greater Manchester Consortium of Credit Unions with People Powered Retrofit and ABCUL. A Greater Manchester initiative to offer credit union finance for household retrofit.


    Green Loans:

    Led by South Manchester Credit Union, offering Credit Union loans from £500-£15000 to Burnage residents for 
    household improvements and lifestyle changes to support the sustainability agenda.


    Burnage Library Activity and Information Hub:

    OMCVS funded and supporting local sustainability. Avoiding single use plastic and reusing crockery, via local 
    procurement and supply chains wherever possible. Provides parking for cycles to encourage active travel. Solar panels have been fitted by Southway. The centre's projects include gardening, 'repair to reuse' and warm space 
    provision with energy efficiency information.
