  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and biodiversity:

    • Source and provide tree planting at Barlow Moor Community Association (BMCA) to replace dead trees.
    • Support groups of local residents with planting and greening projects in their area, including identifying opportunities for additional tree planting in empty tree pits

    Young people:

    • Continue to support BMCA and residents groups in Merseybank to hold regular play streets. Work with Highways and Department for Transport to secure programme of closures for 2023/4. Support residents with the delivery of play streets
    • Work with BMCA to deliver a fun day for young people where they can find out more about climate change
    • Offer grant funding to schools for climate change related projects
    • Work with local schools to promote active travel and explore opportunities for one off school street events

    Transport, active travel, air quality:

    • Joint session on transport to be delivered to Chorlton Good Neighbours service users via weekly coffee morning.
    • Work with Highways Team to disseminate information about implementation of cycle lane and address issues raised by the community.
    • Address barriers to active travel, particularly cycling, by promoting local courses in cycling proficiency, bike maintenance and relevant grants to help fund security measures. Target 2023/24: Hold cluster event which includes offer of free bike repair and maintenance

    Things we buy, use and bin:

    • Support Upcycle and climate change event at BMCA in April 2023
    • Hold event for Chorlton and Chorlton Park ward residents to focus on the opportunities for re-using and re-cycling.
    • Work in partnership with Biffa to engage with residents to provide education and support around recycling
    • Support and encourage traders and takeaways in Chorlton to get involved in the Refill Campaign and promote with residents and community groups.

    Food:

    • Work with Manchester Adult Education Service to deliver tailored information session on low carbon food options for older people at Chorlton Good Neighbours.
    • Promote Chorlton Eats website with information and tips on how to eat a lower carbon diet
    • Ensure all catered events hosted by the Neighbourhood Team throughout the year use low carbon options and do not include avoidable single use plastics. Encourage any NIF funded community events to follow the same approach.

    Homes and energy efficiency:

    • Work with Manchester Adult Education Service to deliver tailored information session on energy efficiency options for older people at Chorlton Good Neighbours.
    • Hold event to promote the opportunities for reducing energy in the home – working toward an event in October 2023
    • Link Groundwork Energy Doctors into local events to provide free advice to residents around energy efficiency

    Engagement, raising awareness, influencing change:

    • Support Manchester Adult Education to hold introductory climate change session(s) at Chorlton Good Neighbours.
    • Attend and/ or support local events such as Merseyfest, Arrowfest and the Great Get Together to provide community engagement on climate change
    • Promote relevant funding opportunities and use NIF to support local projects around climate change and sustainability
    • Collaborate with Chorlton Central Church to partner on holding and supporting sustainability events to include Chorlton/ Chorlton Park.

  2. Who else is involved, and what they're doing

    Social Housing Decarbonisation Scheme:

    Led by Southway Housing. 259 Properties are being installed with new cavity / loft insulation and low energy 
    lighting under the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund, improving Energy Performance ratings from D to C.

     

    Two events led by Barlow Moor Community Association:

    • 1. Upcycle event
    • 2. Merseyfest

     

    Various play street days:

    Led by resident groups with Manchester City Council

     

    Great Chorlton Get Together:

    Led by Chorlton Community Co-op with Chorlton Traders, a range of Community group and the Manchester City Council Neighbourhoods Team. Involves collaborative climate change engagement.
