  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Climate Change activities in the Piccadilly ward are managed jointly with the Deansgate ward.

    Nature and biodiversity:

    • Work with Northern Quarter Action Group to establish a bee-friendly rooftop garden with volunteers such as on Printworks.
    • Use Levelling Up Fund (LIF) to improve canal basins by creating or enhancing existing floating gardens by the end of the year, in partnership with Canal and Rivers Trust.
    • Identify suitable locations for at least five new and replacement trees in the ward.
    • Provide ongoing support to community groups such as Castlefield Clean and Green and fund at least two greening projects.

    Young people:

    • Liaise with Cheetham's School of Music and encourage eco-school status.
    • Work with the Manchester Craft and Design Centre to host a child-focused event with sustainability theme in Autumn.
    • Organise at least one Active Street event in summer

    Transport, active travel, air quality:

    • Hold a Clean Air Day event to engage with city centre users and residents in June 2023 
    • Promote anti-idling messages through action days and raising awareness in the Stevenson Square area.
    • Work with Highways to utilise the Activation Fund in promoting active travel throughout the year.

    Things we buy, use and bin:

    • Host at least one event focused on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (RRR) by the end of the year.
    • Engage at least 20 people on this theme by, for instance, giving them a recycle split bag or food caddy.
    • Ensure Biffa or other waste partners attend every event throughout the year

    Food:

    • Fund and/or support at least two food growing or sustainable diet awareness raising projects

    Homes and energy efficiency:

    • Promote energy saving options for the home which also reduce carbon footprint at every event this year where the climate change stall is set up

    Engagement, raising awareness, influencing change:

    • Facilitate two Climate Fresk events or other engagement activities for residents and businesses
    • Commit at least £5k of Neighbourhood Investment Funding to Climate change projects in the ward.
    • Engage with residents and city centre visitors on climate change at least 3 events.
    • Establish a regular climate change information stall position in town by the end of the year.

    Castlefield Clean and Green / Castlefield Forum:

    Castlefield Forum and Castlefield Clean and Green protect and enhance the beauty of Castlefield (www.ourcastlefield.co.uk)

     

    Northern Quarter Action Group (NQAG):

    The NQAG is a cooperative of residents, business owners and stakeholders who come together to improve the area (www.northernquarteraction.group/)

     

    Friends of Angel Meadows:

    This is an active community group that keeps the park maintained and ensures that the history of the area is promoted throughout the ongoing regeneration of the surrounding area (www.friends-of-angel-meadow.org/)

     

    Friends of Sackville Gardens:

    This group takes an active role in keeping the Gardens as a green space that all can use and value. The group work with partners to arrange and facilitate community events throughout the year (Sackville Gardens Friends Association Official | Facebook)
