Ward-specific objectives
Nature and Biodiversity:
- Deliver the My Wild Neighbourhood nature and biodiversity improvement project. Over the year, plant 1,000 flower bulbs with 10 different community groups or schools in Rusholme.
- Work with residents, Manchester Metropolitan University and other Council teams to deliver the 4,700 trees project. Continue to use the project as an avenue to seek funding for trees in the cluster.
- Over the year work with the Universities on a nature recovery project. Get their commitment and the resources to create a road map for improvements in Rusholme.
- Provide ongoing support to community groups for resident-led cleaning and greening work.
Young People:
- By the end of the year, support and encourage at least four resident-led Play Street events in the ward.
- Work with Manchester Grammar School to set up a community engagement project. By the end of the year get students into the community doing environmental improvements.
- Over the year hold at least two youth-focused climate change engagement events in Rusholme.
Sustainable Transport, Active Travel and Air Quality:
- Help facilitate the Birch Calm Roads traffic calming project. Work with Highways and the Sustainable Transport Team to get funding for the project. Seek alternative avenues for support such as through the Lidl development.
- Collaborate with Moss Side partners to deliver the Wilmslow Road corridor programme. Advocate for more biodiversity investment and continued cycling priority.
Things We Buy, Use and Bin:
- Ensure Biffa or other waste partners are at every event hosted throughout the year. Help them to engage with at least 50 residents on waste and recycling.
- Undertake a cleaning and greening campaign in the Rusholme District Centre. Deliver it in partnership with businesses and residents by the end of the year.
- Over the year ensure that our events have no avoidable single-use plastics.
- Lantern festival: Promote tea light ones, not the ones you release in the air. Just littering really. Could the lanterns be created with sustainable or reused materials?
- Support the Refill campaign and get at least 5 new businesses or locations signed up by the end of the year.
Sustainable Food:
- Encourage at least two groups to apply for Neighbourhood Investment Funding for food growing or sustainable food provision.
Homes and Energy Efficiency:
- Share with residents the details of government-funded support schemes for energy efficiency improvements.
Engagement and Raising Awareness:
- Collaborate with partner organisations in Hulme, Moss Side and Rusholme to deliver a joint project. Aim to deliver at least one clean and green initiative by the end of the year.
- Attend community events to speak with residents about climate change and environment. Engage at least 50 Moss Side residents on the topic.
- Support residents and organisations who want to engage the community in climate action planning.
