Piccadilly

  1. Ward-specific objectives

Climate Change activities in the Piccadilly ward are managed jointly with the Deansgate ward.

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • City Centre Growers Network: Support regular meetings over the year. Offer spaces, resources, and contacts.
    • St Johns Gardens: Oversee replanting. Work with volunteers for success. Start by the end of the year.
    • Canal-Side Walking Routes: Improve routes with the Canals and Rivers Trust. Use funding over the year to revamp planters.
    • Rain gardens: Map all the rain gardens in the city centre. Encourage businesses and groups to care for them. Aim for three gardens tended by the community by the end of the year.
    • Use corporate volunteers and community payback to improve city centre areas. Target Baird Street and Pioneer Quay. Aim for 100 volunteer hours over the year.
    • Mirabel Street: Complete replanting with Plant MCR and residents by the end of the year.

    Children and Young People:

    • Student Events: Attend two events by the end of the year. Engage 50 students on climate change and the environment.
    • Crown Point Primary: Work to reduce anti-social parking around the new school.

Transport, Active Travel and Air Quality:

    • Bike Safety: Work with Greater Manchester Police and cycling groups. Tag 100 bikes with Bike Register tags over the year.
    • Clean Air Initiatives: Support city centre initiatives with other Manchester City Council departments throughout the year.
    • Clean Air Day: Host an event in the city centre in June 2025.

Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:

    • Christmas Tree Recycling: Repeat the scheme in the city centre. Expand to three more areas by the end of the year.
    • Ensure Biffa or partners attend all events. Engage 50 residents over the year.
    • Single-Use Plastics: Avoid single-use plastics such as disposable coffee cups at all our events throughout the year.
    • Great British Spring Clean: Host two events during the 2026 campaign period. Engage at least 25 people.
    • Cup Deposit Scheme: Explore the potential for a scheme at events like Pride or Sounds of the City.

    Food:

    • Provide funding for two food growing or sustainable food projects over the year.
    • Establish a new food growing site with the City Centre Growers Network by the end of the year.

Engagement, Raising Awareness and Influencing Change:

    • Create a procedure for channelling corporate volunteering requests into meaningful activities. Facilitate 100 hours of corporate volunteering by the end of the year.
    • Prioritise Neighbourhood Investment Fund applications for sustainability projects. Allocate at least £7,000 over the year.
