  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • Improve green spaces in Old Moat:
      • Support plans to develop a community garden at Old Moat Sure Start Centre.
      • Grass verge greening at Whitchurch Road and further fruit tree planting.
      • Develop the ‘In-Bloom project’ and include a new alleyway greening project in the student area.
    • Develop Clean and Green improvement projects at Easthope and Strathblane estates. Continue plans to create a community garden.
    • Arrange a clean and green event. Improve areas of persistent fly-tipping. Work with the Community Payback Team, Biffa, and Compliance Team. Target areas: Gledhill car park, Lombard Grove, Granville Road, and back alleyways on Davenport and Rippingham Road.
    • Increase the number of trees in Old Moat. Include miniature fruit trees and herbs in Easthope estate's community garden.

    Children and Young People:

    • Work with schools from Old Moat, Withington, and Fallowfield. Complete the schools’ cross-ward film project. Host engagement drop-in events to show the film and the work of the young people.
    • Encourage school involvement in citywide campaigns:
      • Old Moat Primary School, Bridgelea Primary School, Withington Girls School, and West Didsbury Primary School.
      • Include “Keep Manchester Tidy” litter picks, Eco-Schools, and Green School Network.
    • Work with Manchester City Council’s Eco-School Officer and Education Department. Support schools to achieve Green Flag status. Promote Green Schools Network and other environmental education opportunities.

    Transport, Active Travel and Air Quality:

    • Host a road closure event in partnership with Active Streets. Raise awareness of the impact transport has on the environment.
    • Promote key campaigns:
      • Leave Your Car at Home Day
      • Clean Air Day
      • Road Safety Week
    • Address barriers to active travel, especially cycling:
      • Promote local cycling courses (e.g. Alexandra Park, Wythenshawe Park).
      • Promote use of Beryl bikes located on Granville Road/Wilmslow Road.
    • Share grant information to help fund security measures.
    • Work with partners including TfGM, Bike Doctors, MCR Active, Bike Kitchen, and Platt Fields Bike Hub.
    • Include free repair and maintenance at local events.

    Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:

    • Deliver the ‘Give It Don’t Bin It’ campaign at student departure:
      • Eight drop-off points across five wards.
      • Involve local charities, community venues, and food banks in redistribution of unwanted items.
    • Strengthen partnership working with Biffa, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Manchester, and Manchester Student Homes. Help embed waste management messages.
    • Work with local charities and thrift stores. Encourage students to recycle and upcycle clothing.
    • Arrange a ‘Student Welcome’ initiative:
      • Provide waste management reminders.
      • Identify 50 streets to be visited (e.g. Davenport Rd, Rippingham Rd, Lausanne Rd, Wellington Rd, Granville Rd, Lombard Grove, Latchmere Rd, Victoria Rd).
      • Put extra blue bin collections in place during Student Welcome Week.
    • Engage to reduce single-use plastics. Encourage more sustainable lifestyles.
    • Promote the Manchester Refill Campaign:
      • Engage with new businesses and community hubs to encourage new refill stations.
      • Visit Withington District Centre, including Copson Street and Withington Village Centre.
      • Encourage residents to download the app to refill on the go.

    Food:

    • Support and promote local ‘Grow Your Own’ and cooking projects:
      • Promote cooking on a budget and using less energy.
      • Encourage learning around less carbon-intensive meals.
    • Support Old Moat Sure Start Centre’s ‘Grow Your Own’ initiative to develop and expand.
    • Promote relevant funding, including Neighbourhood Investment Funding.
    • Encourage and support residents to join gardening groups or grow their own food.
    • Work with ‘Sow the City’ on their food growing project.
    • Promote and refer residents to Withington & Fallowfield and Quid's In food banks.
    • Support Fallowfield & Withington Foodbank as part of the student ‘Give It Don’t Bin It’ campaign. Support redistribution of unwanted food.

    Homes and Energy:

    • Hold or partner at a ward event. Provide energy efficiency advice, including at student events. Promote local events where this advice is available.
    • Distribute LED lightbulbs to help make homes more energy efficient.
    • Invite relevant partners such as Groundwork Green Doctors and CAB.

    Engagement, Raising Awareness and Influencing Change:

    • Arrange and promote climate-related events and activities. Work with Southway Housing and Manchester Student Homes.
    • Attend events arranged by the Health Development Co-ordinator. Highlight the link between extreme weather and health.
    • Support behaviour change towards actions we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint.
    • Promote funding opportunities to support voluntary and community groups to take action. Ensure Neighbourhood Investment Funding is used to support climate-related activity.
