Ward-specific objectives
Nature and Biodiversity:
- Successfully deliver the My Wild Neighbourhood nature and biodiversity improvement project. By the end of the year, plant over 1,000 flower bulbs with 10 different community groups or schools in the ward.
- Work with residents, Manchester Metropolitan University and other Council teams to deliver the 4,700 Trees project. Continue to use the project as an avenue to seek funding for trees in the cluster.
- Secure funding for at least five new street trees across the ward by the end of the year. As a priority, explore the potential for new trees on Smart Street and Mount Road.
- Work with residents to identify empty or disused street tree pits in the ward. Work with partners to replace five by the end of the year or planting season.
- Assist Groundwork's Postcode Gardener to improve at least two greenspaces in Longsight. Provide any support that Groundwork needs for the wider project.
- Support residents with alleyway greening projects over the year. Target MacFaren Street and Hopkins Street first. Aim to establish projects in these areas.
Young People:
- Work with parents and staff at St Agnes and Longsight Community Primary to put on Clean Air Day events in June 2025.
- Collaborate with Youth Elements and Better We to put on youth-focused engagement sessions. Use these sessions to gather views and ideas for future action planning. By the end of the year, host at least three sessions and set up a green skills workshop for young people.
- Enable Longsight Community Arts Space to run a litter-picking competition in the ward. Utilise Social Value or other funding to provide a prize to encourage young people.
Active Travel and Clean Air:
- Run a series of "Bling Your Bike" road safety sessions with Bee Pedal Ready. Secure funding to run the sessions in schools during Road Safety Week in November 2025. Aim to engage at least 100 Longsight residents on cycle safety.
- Oversee improvements to the Glencastle Active Travel route. Work with residents and other stakeholders to improve the area by the end of the year. Aim to get the route included in wider Manchester active travel mapping.
- Secure funding for air pollution-blocking “tredges” in schools over the year. Use Lancaster University’s 2022 "Protecting Playgrounds" study to inform planting decisions. Aim to plant a tredge in at least one school in Longsight.
- Explore the potential for a cycling workshop with Women’s Voices. Help them apply to the TfGM Wheeling and Walking fund if needed.
Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:
- Ensure Biffa or other waste partners are present at every event hosted throughout the year. Help them engage with at least 50 residents on waste and recycling.
- Ensure that all events throughout the year avoid single-use plastics such as disposable coffee cups.
- Explore funding options for fabric repair workshops in the ward. Aim to establish a repair workshop by the end of the year in Longsight Pavilion or another location.
- Help Longsight Community Arts Space to hold a waste-art project in Crowcroft Park.
- Host at least two cleaning and greening events during the 2026 Great British Spring Clean. Aim to engage at least 25 people at the events.
Sustainable Food:
- Use NIF and other funding schemes to support at least two food growing projects in the ward.
- Work with 422 on their food growing project and help them increase reach, for instance, through a cook-and-grow-at-home kit.
- Work with partners on the disused allotment site at Hemsworth Road. Aim to secure at least part of it for planting and growing.
Homes and Energy Efficiency:
- Share details of government-funded support schemes for energy efficiency improvements with residents. Aim for 10% more referrals to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Retrofit Portal than in 2024–2025.
- Aim to set up a retrofit house demonstration for Longsight residents. Explore this with Longsight Housing Cooperative in the first instance.
Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:
- Encourage at least two new groups to apply for Neighbourhood Investment Funding for climate change and environment projects.
- Collaborate with the Digital Inclusion Team to deliver a digital literacy project. Focus the project on waste and recycling and how to report issues.
- Use the Our Longsight Festival to engage with residents on climate change and what they want to see in their local plan.
