  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • Increase biodiversity and create attractive green space.
    • On Bethnall Drive Estate, develop Sopwith Community Garden with residents.
      • Target 25/26: Host at least two gardening events on site, one with school children.
    • Introduce alleyway greening along the pathway leading to the Brailsford Road Allotments.
      • Target 25/26: Introduce new planters and palettes. Recruit volunteers to support the cleaning and greening of Brailsford Road.
    • Encourage tree planting and increase biodiversity in Platt Fields Park, including Shakespeare Gardens, Platt Hall Gardens, and Platt Fields Market Garden (Manchester Urban Diggers).
    • Encourage more residents to visit Platt Fields Park. Champion and support creative projects and events.
      • Share opportunities to plant trees as part of the 4700 trees campaign, in honour of the late MP Sir Gerald Kaufman.
      • Work with the ‘Nature Neighbourhood’ project in Platt Fields Park. Help build a community-led Neighbourhood Plan to tackle nature and climate crises.
      • Fund at least one event in Platt Fields Park.
      • Support development of an additional mural on a gable end. Theme around nature and the link to Platt Fields Park.

    Children and Young People:

    • Continue to work with local schools in Fallowfield, Withington and Old Moat to tackle climate change. Complete the School’s Environmental Project – Activity and Film.
    • Support Fallowfield schools to engage with citywide campaigns, including Keep Manchester Tidy.
    • Promote networks of educational activity led by the Education Department, including universities and environmental organisations.
      • Target 25/26: Host engagement drop-in events to showcase the film and work of the young people.
    • Encourage schools to take part in the Eco-Schools Programme. Provide help with achieving Green Flag Status. Promote engagement in the Green Schools Network.

    Transport, Active Travel, Air Quality:

    • Encourage active travel. Raise awareness of the impact transport has on the environment.
    • Promote campaigns including Leave Your Car at Home Day, Clean Air Day and Road Safety Week. Distribute relevant resources.
    • Highlight the Fallowfield Loop as a key asset for cycling.
    • Address barriers to cycling such as confidence and security. Share information on local cycling courses and funding opportunities.
      • Target 25/26: Host at least two Active Street Road Closure events. Include free bike repairs and maintenance.
    • Promote new local walking and cycling routes across the ward.
      • Target 25/26: Deliver Age Friendly bench route connecting Fallowfield Triangle and The Place with Platt Fields Park.
    • Work with the University of Manchester’s Air Quality Supersite at Firs Botanical Grounds to engage with the community and local schools.
      • Target 25/26: Support and promote school visits and open days.
    • Increase the number of trees in Fallowfield to help improve air quality. Support tree planting for the 4700 trees campaign.

    Things We Buy and Throw Away:

    • Reduce fly-tipping, commercial waste, and residential misuse of communal bins at Fallowfield Triangle.
      • Target 25/26: Run a programme of activity to target commercial fly-tipping. Include Council Neighbourhoods, Waste and Recycling, and Compliance and Licensing teams.
    • ‘Give It Don’t Bin It’ campaign: Roll out a sustainable approach to managing student departure. Avoid items going to landfill.
    • Set up drop-off points on Landcross Road and Brailsford Road. Promote to students to donate items no longer required. Recycle to charities and community hubs to keep items in use.
      • Target 25/26: Visit 50 streets, 12 in Fallowfield. Provide waste management reminders. Offer extra blue collections to help with increased paper and card around student arrival.
    • Support Manchester Refill Campaign.
      • Engage with local businesses and community hubs to encourage local refill stations. Potential locations: Fallowfield Triangle and Fallowfield District Centre.
      • Encourage residents to download the app to refill on the go.
      • Target 25/26: Plan a Fallowfield Refill Day(s) of Action. Visit businesses at Fallowfield Triangle and/or Fallowfield District Centre.

    Food:

    • Support and promote local ‘Grow Your Own’ initiatives. Encourage learning around less carbon-intensive food and meals.
    • Engage with Incredible Edible, Platt Fields Market Garden (Manchester Urban Diggers), and Fallowfield’s Secret Garden.
      • Target 25/26: Engage with a Fallowfield school or community group on a ‘Grow Your Own’ initiative.
    • Support Fallowfield and Withington Foodbank as part of the ‘Give It Don’t Bin It’ campaign. Redistribute unwanted food items following student departure.
    • Promote relevant funding to support ‘The Place’ Pantry and Fallowfield and Withington Food Bank.

    Homes and Energy:

    • Share energy efficiency advice at local events.
    • Provide LED lightbulbs to help local homes be more energy efficient. Support cost savings and reduce environmental impact.
      • Target 25/26: Strengthen partnership work with Housing Associations. Support provision of advice and information.
      • Target 25/26: Create an initiative with Manchester Student Homes to educate students on home energy.

    Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:

    • Raise awareness of the impact of our changing climate. Engage at local events and through media campaigns. Promote actions to reduce our carbon footprint.
      • Target 25/26: Promote the Eco-Schools Film to show what action young people are taking.
    • Promote relevant funding to support local Voluntary, Community and Faith sectors. Include use of the Neighbourhood Investment Fund (NIF) to support climate-related projects in Fallowfield.
