  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • Develop, support and promote alley greening projects e.g. Bibby Lane and Monica Grove. Reduce fly tipping and improve recycling.
    • Support local groups. Consider Burnage in Bloom, Friends of Monica Grove, Kingsway Athletic Football Club, and Friends of Mauldeth Road Station.
    • Work with MCC Grounds Technical team to provide a supply of plants for Burnage in Bloom.
    • Work with the Parks Department and Friends Groups to ensure green areas are improved and maintained to a high standard.
    • Consider support to Cringle Park as required.

    Young People:

    • Help to arrange an Active Street event in partnership with Westcroft Community Centre. Include climate engagement to raise awareness and promote key steps everyone can take to reduce their carbon footprint.
    • School Streets (Road Closure events). Continue to support Acacias Primary School streets and Junior PCSO Scheme.
    • Work with local residents, St Bernard’s RC Primary School, and Green End Primary Schools to support a further school street(s) pilot on Broadhill Road.
    • Encourage involvement in the Green School Network led by the Education team. Schools include:
      • Burnage Academy for Boys
      • Levenshulme High School for Girls
      • Green End Road Primary School
      • St Bernard’s RC Primary School
      • Cringle Brook Primary School
      • Acacias Community Primary School.
    • Encourage recycling of uniforms and shoes.
    • Promote school trips to Longley Lane Recycling Centre. Consider outreach as an option.

    Transport, Air Quality, Active Travel:

    • Continue to promote environmental campaigns to provide schools with opportunities to take action (e.g. Clean Air Day, Road Safety Week).
      • Target 25/26: Explore potential for clean air activity. Include action to deter vehicle idling.
    • Promote funding for local groups to deliver road safety and active travel projects.
    • Promote the Burnage Age-friendly trail maps produced by Southway Housing Trust to encourage active travel.

    Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:

    • Sustainable Fashion: Hold an event to encourage residents to recycle clothes, swap, repair or upcycle in order to keep them in use.
    • Waste Management: Work in partnership with Biffa Engagement Team to engage with residents and provide recycling education and support.
    • Work in partnership with a local project to improve waste management. Arrange a trip to Longley Lane Recycling Centre.
    • Manchester Refill: Work to increase the number of local businesses or community locations signed up to the Refill campaign. Engage with residents and encourage them to download the app to refill on the go.

    Food:

    • Ensure all catered events hosted throughout the year include low carbon options and do not include avoidable single-use plastics.
    • Promote any relevant funding to help community groups increase food planting. Consider Burnage Good Neighbours, Friends of Burnage Library, and Acorn Close Allotments.
    • Continue to include smoothie bikes at events to demonstrate what can be made with surplus fruit to avoid waste.

    Homes and Energy Efficiency:

    • Continue to promote energy efficiency when engaging with residents.
      • Target 2025/26: Host or collaborate with partners to deliver at least one energy-efficient event in the year. Invite Energy Buddies and Green Doctor to provide a range of support to save energy.
    • Promote retrofit opportunities. Include links to the GMCA portal to allow residents to make direct enquiries around eligibility for support.

    Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:

    • Continue engagement across the ward. Raise awareness and influence behaviour change.
    • Identify events taking place during 2025/26 to have climate conversations.
    • Identify any opportunities to work with faith groups in the ward.
    • Take part in Burnage Sure Start family event. Provide information on behaviours that help reduce carbon footprint.
    • Promote relevant funding streams to support climate-related projects (e.g. The Beautiful South, Neighbourhood Investment Fund). Ensure the ward budget is used to support climate-related projects.
      • Target 2025/26: Consider a Burnage Dragon’s Den event to encourage residents to apply for climate-related projects.
    • Work with Manchester Student Homes in areas with a higher student population. Promote key messages during student return and departure to improve waste management.
    • Target areas: door-to-door visits on Monica Grove, Fortuna Grove, and Edenhall Avenue.
    • Set up drop-off locations to allow students to donate unwanted items.
