Ward-specific objectives
Nature and Biodiversity:
- Work with Walking Mums Club and other partners to enhance and promote green spaces.
- Work with Sow the City to consider tree planting in local parks.
- Consider locations for planting fruit trees and hedges across Baguley.
- Planters, plants in schools, and communal areas.
- Work with the Bideford Centre to create a memorial garden.
Young People:
- Promote and support green activity in local schools. Include campaigns such as Keep Britain Tidy and Eco Schools Programme.
- Work with Piper Hill to put on an event for the Great British Spring Clean.
- Support activity at Road Safety Week.
- Raise awareness of the effects of litter.
- Support an art competition at a local school in Baguley.
- Work with Bideford Centre and schools in Baguley to reduce clothing poverty.
Transport, Air Quality, Active Travel:
- Hold an Active Street (road closure) event. Highlight benefits for cleaner air.
Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:
- Promote sustainable fashion initiatives at a local community venue (such as Bideford Community Centre and/or Tree of Life).
- Consider repeating the ‘Repair to Re-wear’ sustainable sewing project.
- Work with Recycle for Greater Manchester (R4GM) to improve recycling and reuse.
- Promote R4GM Community Fund for local projects.
- Work with Biffa Engagement Team to promote recycling at local events.
- Promote tours of the Waste and Recycling Centre and Renew Hub.
- Continue to promote Manchester Refill campaign. Provide window stickers for businesses that have signed up.
Food:
- Ensure catered events hosted in Baguley include low carbon options and avoid single-use plastic.
- Support food planting/grow your own projects.
- Promote Wythenshawe Grows Together Project.
- Signpost community garden groups to funding sources. Encourage groups in Baguley to apply for Neighbourhood Investment Fund and Food Insecurity grants for equipment and materials.
- Continue to promote/work with:
- Family Hub on their Cooking on a Budget Project.
- Sow The City on their food growing project.
- Fare Shop food pantry.
- Family Hub infant feeding programme.
- Blossom food growing and cooking project.
Homes and Energy Efficiency:
- Provide LED lightbulbs at events as a practical energy efficiency measure.
- Invite partners to provide energy efficiency advice at events. Include CAB and Groundworks Green Doctors.
- Ensure advice is provided at Age Friendly Wythenshawe’s Older Person’s Events.
Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:
- Work with Wythenshawe Community Housing Group to arrange Climate Change Community Connector event. Invite residents and community groups.
- Promote funding to support the delivery of climate action.
- Ensure NIF is used to support climate-related projects.
- Embed climate engagement at community events. Include Wythenshawe Games and Age Friendly Events during the year.
