Ardwick

  1. Ward-specific objectives

    Nature and Biodiversity:

    • Successfully deliver the My Wild Neighbourhood nature and biodiversity improvement project. By the end of the year, plant over 1,000 flower bulbs with 10 different community groups or schools in Ardwick.
    • Work with residents, Manchester Metropolitan University and other Council teams to deliver the 4,700 trees project. Continue to use the project as an avenue to seek funding for trees in the cluster.
    • By the end of the year establish at least one new wildflower meadow in the ward. Aim for an unused greenspace such as Coverdale Crescent.
    • Over the year encourage 20 people to grow plants at home.
    • Assist Groundwork's Postcode Gardener to improve at least two greenspaces in Ardwick. Provide any support that Groundwork need for the wider project.
    • Identify five dead street trees and get them replaced by the end of the next planting season in spring 2026.

    Young People:

    • Work with Dean Trust Secondary School over the year on environmental improvement projects. Help deliver their RHS Nature Parks funding on site. Also collaborate on a project to improve nearby walking routes to school.
    • Encourage at least two Play Street or road closure events over the year. Ensure one of these is in June 2025 to coincide with Clean Air Day.

    Transport, Air Quality, Active Travel:

    • Support the delivery of road closure events in at least two new places by the end of the year.
    • Over the year secure funding for air pollution-blocking “tredges” in schools. Use Lancaster University’s 2022 "Protecting Playgrounds" study to inform the planting decisions. Aim to plant a tredge in at least one school in Ardwick.
    • Run a series of "bling your bike" road safety sessions with Bee Pedal Ready. Secure funding to run the sessions in schools during Road Safety Week in November 2025. Aim to engage at least 100 Ardwick residents on cycle safety.

Things We Buy, Use and Throw Away:

    • Ensure Biffa or other waste partners are at every event hosted throughout the year. Help them to engage with at least 50 residents on waste and recycling.
    • Over the year ensure that our events have no avoidable single-use plastics.
    • Support local community groups to establish regular repair workshops in West Gorton. Provide ongoing support over the year to ensure the sessions are successful.
    • Host at least two cleaning and greening events during the 2026 Great British Spring Clean. Aim to engage at least 25 people at the events.

    Food:

    • Use Neighbourhood Investment Funding and other schemes to support at least two food growing projects in the ward by the end of the year.
    • Over the year work with a local group to successfully deliver a grow-and-cook at home project.

    Homes and Energy Efficiency:

    • Assist Community Owned Renewables Energy (CORE) to engage Ardwick residents on community energy. Help them to deliver their Victoria Baths project over the year.
    • Share with residents the details of government-funded support schemes for energy efficiency improvements. Aim for 10% more referrals to the Greater Manchester Retrofit portal than in 2024–2025.

    Engagement, Raising Awareness, Influencing Change:

    • Plan and deliver at least two climate change roadshows over the year. Use the roadshows to share information and awareness of climate change. Engage with at least 50 residents on the subject over the year.
    • Over the year, all community events in the ward to have climate change information on offer. Work with partners such as housing providers to ensure we make resources available.
