Imported foods not of animal origin (FNAO)
Foods (not of animal origin) imported from other countries, are required to comply with the conditions laid down in the Official Feed and Food Controls ( England ) Regulations 2009.
Certain foods are subject to increased official controls and emergency measures, due to known or emerging problems. These foods are reviewed and updated regularly. Assimilated Regulation (EU) 2019/1793 specifies the increased or emergency measures on foodstuffs entering the country. Foodstuffs affected by these Regulations must be presented to a designated Border Control Post for entry into the Great Britain (GB) with the necessary documents. You can find the list of foodstuffs with current GB import restrictions at the Food Standards Agency website.
Food business operators are required to give at least four hours advanced notification of the importation of such high-risk products. The documentation that is required includes:
- Part 1 of a Common Health Entry Document (CHED) completed on IPAFFS (Import of Products, Animals, Food and Feed System)
- Phytosanitary certificates (if required)
- Health certificates (if required)
- Airway bill
- Invoices and packing lists (if available)
- Any other relevant accompanying documentation.
Each consignment will be subject to a documentary, identity and physical check including sampling, if appropriate, before Part 2 of the CHED is completed. The fully completed CHED is required for customs clearance purposes.
