Rob's experience as a supported lodgings provider

Rob is one of Manchester's providers of supported lodgings for young people. He says;

"For me, it’s about giving a young person a stable home so they can develop the skills they need to be an independent adult. It's important that everyone who stays with me knows that my home is their home. I want them to feel comfortable and supported throughout their stay.

I had a young man stay with me from 18 until he turned 22. He grew up during his time with me – came out of his shell and became a man. It’s great knowing I helped him develop the skills he needed to become independent.

To do this work, it’s important to be open-minded: every young person is different. There can be challenges and frustrations - particularly when they ignore your advice: you do have difficult days. But I know that if I need support, I can always pick up the phone for advice.

If you've got the experience of working with young people and you want to make a difference, get in touch with the council to find out more. It’s one of the most rewarding things I have done.”
