Business and investment If you don't pay your business rates

A court summons

If you don't pay your business rates or don't keep to an agreement to pay, we can issue you with a court summons.

We will ask the magistrates' court for a Liability Order. This is a demand for you to pay the full amount you owe, plus £102.50 costs.

Make an arrangement to pay

You should sign the arrangement form enclosed with the summons and make the payments you have agreed to.

Defending yourself in court

You have the right to attend the court and offer evidence as to why the Council's application for a Liability Order should not be granted by the Court.

If you feel you have a valid defence and would like to appear in court at the hearing you can make the request using this form.

If you decide not to attend court, you can contact us anyway by phone 0161 234 1103. We will try to come to a reasonable arrangement with you for payment.
