Consultation results

The Northern Gateway consultation (August to October 2018) asked for the views of Manchester residents and businesses on the vision, core objectives and strategic development framework (SRF) for the area. 

The SRF area covers approximately 155 hectares to the north of Manchester city centre between Victoria Station, NOMA and the Northern Quarter in the southwest, and Queens Park and the intermediate Ring Road (Queens Road) to the north-east.

Summary of responses:

  • Delivering a unique and high quality residential-led regeneration scheme: 70 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed with the proposal to deliver a unique and high quality residential-led regeneration scheme. 
  • Delivering social and community facilities: 83 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed that a social and community infrastructure will enable local employment opportunities and provide facilities for community benefit. 
  • Strengthening transport connectivity and sustainable travel: 74 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed that the regeneration of the Northern Gateway provides an opportunity to improve the way people travel between new and existing neighbourhoods. 
  • Urbanising Rochdale Road: 78 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed with proposals to improve the pedestrian experience and local amenities on Rochdale Road, which is a main transport route into and out of Manchester.
  • Providing high quality parks and public spaces: 78 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed that the SRF should aim to capitalise on the presence of the River Irk and the Irk Valley, making this the green heart of the area and linking it to a network of parks and green spaces that run through the Northern Gateway neighbourhoods. 
  • Creation and management of place: 78 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed that the delivery of high quality public realm, and its long-term management, will play a pivotal role in the area’s regeneration.
  • Planning for a low carbon future: 78 per cent either strongly agreed or agreed that the proposed development of the Northern Gateway fully supports Manchester’s carbon emissions reduction plan.
