Consultations and surveys Deansgate consultation

The proposed permanent scheme

This consultation is now closed.

Deansgate between Blackfriars Street and King Street

It is proposed that this section will remain open one-way in a southbound direction, to buses, taxis and cycles. We are now proposing to make permanent the measures that have been put in place to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety since the return of buses to the area last December.

We are proposing to include a bus gate at the junction of Blackfriars Street and Deansgate for southbound buses, taxis and cycles which will control traffic through this section. Servicing hours are TBC.

Deansgate from King Street to Quay Street

It is proposed to make this permanently one-way only, in a southbound direction (with the northbound carriageway closed).

A Northbound contraflow cycle lane is proposed to run for the length of Deansgate from Quay Street to Blackfriars Street.

St Mary's Parsonage

Under the proposals St Mary’s Parsonage will be closed to traffic at its northern end, this is to prevent traffic from diverting around the closed section of Deansgate.

Bridge Street

We are also proposing to create a bus gate on Bridge Street, after its junction with Left Bank, meaning that only buses, taxis and cycles will be able to travel out of the city centre across the River Irwell into Salford via this route. This bus-only corridor is designed to complement the other measures to support public transport.

Gartside Street between Quay Street and New College Street

It is proposed that the section of Gartside Street between Quay Street and New College Street will remain two-way. There is a lot of loading activity in this area, as well as the exit from the NCP car park. Retaining two-way traffic on this section will allow this traffic to exit directly back onto Quay Street rather than having to travel around the full gyratory. It is also proposed that Gartside Street between New College Street and Bridge Street will be one-way northbound with a segregated cycle route in a southbound direction.

It is proposed that buses will be permitted to travel northwards on Cross Street, and general traffic will not be able to proceed any further than the junction with New Market.
