Consultations and surveys Public Realm Strategy consultation

This consultation is now closed

‘Public Realm’ refers to all kinds of publicly accessible urban space. It includes streets, squares, parks and other open spaces, and is sometimes described as the space between buildings.

The quality of the public Realm has been key to the revitalisation of Ancoats. Award-winning streets and squares, as well as new buildings have all contributed to the liveliness and distinctive character of the area.

In 2020 following public consultation, The Poland Street Zone Neighbourhood Development Framework (NDF) set out an ambitious placemaking vision for the next phase of development of Ancoats. The Poland Street Zone - the area bounded by Butler St, Bengal Street, Oldham Road and the Rochdale Canal – is also known as the Back of Ancoats.

We are now consulting on a Draft Public Realm Strategy for Ancoats, which will help realise this vision through the design of streets and spaces as developments come forward in the Back of Ancoats. This strategy will help ensure that future development is grounded in a strong, flexible place- specific strategy that looks to the past as well as the future.

A separate consultation will also be taking place on development proposed at Rodney Street, which will make an important contribution to the public realm in the area, building on the principles in the strategy.
