Deansgate is a hardworking street with lots to offer. We visit for shops, restaurants, bars, and culture. We use it to walk from place to place around the city centre. Many people live on or around the area, and it is home to many businesses and some of our most famous attractions. It’s also a bus, taxi, cycle and vehicle route. As a street it’s also an important symbol of the city, linking to our industrial and Roman heritage.
Deansgate has also changed a lot during its long history and we want to continue to help it grow and change.
To do this we have commissioned a team to develop a vision and permanent design for Deansgate. You may have already shared your views in previous engagement events and consultations, for example the City Centre Active Travel Scheme consultation or some of the interim designs for Deansgate. You may have also seen the recent changes these have brought to the layout and design of Deansgate, and the current work taking place outside Great Northern.
Beyond this, we want to make sure that we are working towards a permanent solution to make sure Deansgate suits the current and future needs of the city for everyone.
We hope we can bring about the transformation of Deansgate from a traffic dominated environment to one that puts those using sustainable transport modes first. We’ll be thinking about how to create improved space to walk, wheel, and cycle, space for businesses to use, a safer night-time environment, improved air quality, and how to support regeneration. They’ll also be thinking about different access requirements, how different junctions work, and different solutions for different sections of Deansgate.
This project covers Deansgate between Victoria Bridge Street (near the cathedral) and Liverpool Road (by the Hilton) and will explore different solutions appropriate to the different sections of Deansgate, whilst building on the work, views and information shared previously, and still including community and business views to help develop permanent positive change. The funding identified for the transformation of Deansgate is £14 million. This is being provided from the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement, which Greater Manchester received from Central Government. This funding means the project is focused on supporting sustainable travel, like walking, cycling and public transport, but we’ll also be thinking about other changes which can be achieved for Deansgate.
