How the changes will impact people on Council Tax Support

These examples show how much a household on Council Tax Support currently pays towards their Council Tax and how much they will have to pay if we increase the maximum Council Tax Support award to 85%. These figures do not assume any Council Tax increase for next year.
Example 1
The current position – a single person receiving the maximum Council Tax Support for working-age households 82.5%:
- Single person living in a Band A property. They are entitled to 25% off their bill because they live on their own. Their only income is Employment and Support Allowance. Their Council Tax bill before Council Tax Support is awarded is £984.75. The Council Tax Support award is £812.42, this leaves them with £172.33 to pay themselves.
- Proposed position - the maximum Council Tax Support for working-age households would be increased to 85%.
- The Council Tax Support award would be £837.04, this would leave them with £147.71 to pay themselves.
Example 2
The current position – a couple receiving the maximum banded Council Tax Support for working-age households of 82.5%.
- Couple living in a Band B property with two children. They receive Disability Living Allowance for their youngest child. They also receive Universal Credit and Child Benefit. Their Council Tax bill before Council Tax Support is awarded is £1,531.83. The Council Tax Support award is £1,263.76, this leaves them with £268.07 to pay themselves.
- Proposed position - the maximum banded Council Tax Support for working-age households would be increased to 85%.
- The Council Tax Support award would be £1,302.06, this would leave them with £229.77 to pay themselves.
Example 3
The current position – a couple receiving banded Council Tax Support for working-age households of 45%.
- Couple living in a band A property. One of them works part time. They also receive Universal Credit. Their Council Tax bill before Council Tax Support is awarded is £1,313.00. The Council Tax Support award is £590.85, this leaves them with £722.15 to pay themselves.
- Proposed position - the banded Council Tax Support for working-age households would be increased to 47.5%.
- The Council Tax Support award would be £623.68, this would leave them with £689.33 to pay themselves.
