Cemetery by-laws and regulations

We believe that Manchester's cemeteries should provide an environment that is peaceful, safe and attractive for visitors. For that reason, a number of by-laws and regulations are in force. They are:

  • Unauthorised access, or inappropriate behaviour is an offence against cemetery by-laws. Public access to the cemeteries is only allowed during the official opening hours (dawn to dusk)
  • Full length planting or kerbs on graves are not permitted as they prevent us from maintaining the cemetery to the high standards we require.
  • Vehicles must not be parked so as to cause disruption or to block any cemetery vehicle or funeral vehicles.
  • Filming or photography is not allowed without prior permission having been given by the cemetery offices.

Access with a vehicle

All of our cemeteries are accessible by vehicle during normal opening hours, however, access with a vehicle is not permitted at Southern Cemetery at weekends or bank holidays due to the large volume of visitors. Disabled or infirm visitors should contact the Incident Response Team on 0161 230 6482 to make special arrangements for gaining access during those times.

Dogs

Dogs are only allowed if they are on leads.
