Roads and transport Road Safety Week: Be safe, be seen

Road Safety Week runs from 17 to 21 November.

This year’s theme is “Be safe, be seen.” It’s all about helping people stay safe on the roads — whether walking, cycling, using public transport or driving.

Why road safety matters

Every year, around 1,700 people die on UK roads. Another 30,000 are seriously injured. These numbers show why road safety is so important.

We want to help everyone — children, adults, and older residents — understand how to stay safe and be visible when travelling. That includes walking, wheeling, cycling or driving. We also want to encourage more kindness and care on the roads.

What we’re focusing on

This year, we’re looking at how everyone can help make journeys safer. That includes:

  • Teaching children how to walk and cycle safely to school
  • Using the Green Cross Code
  • Encouraging safe driving and parking near schools

Who’s involved

We’re working with Brake, our national road safety partner, and local organisations including:

  • Greater Manchester Police
  • Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service
  • NSL (parking services)
  • Local schools

Together, we’re running events and activities to help children learn about road safety.

What’s happening during the week

Here are some of the activities taking place:

  • Theatre workshops – fun and educational sessions for children
  • Bike maintenance – helping children learn how to keep bikes safe
  • Parking patrols – checking for unsafe or illegal parking
  • School street closures – trial events where roads near schools are closed at drop-off and pick-up times to protect children and support active travel

We’re also holding days of action with our neighbourhood teams and partners to tackle:

  • Illegal or unsafe parking
  • Parking on pavements
  • Speeding and other traffic offences
