Conditions to be attached to Private Hire Vehicles

  1. No safety screen shall be installed in a vehicle unless it has previously been approved by the City Council.
  2. No safety screen shall be installed in a vehicle without the prior written consent of the Council.
  3. The proprietor shall ensure that the safety screen is properly and regularly maintained and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions by a suitably qualified person.  Written records of all maintenance and servicing shall be made and retained by the proprietor for a minimum of 12 months.  Such written records shall be made available on demand by an authorised officer of the Council, or a Police officer.
  4. No separation partition will be replaced / installed in any hackney carriage vehicle unless it is being replaced with a partition that has been approved by the vehicle manufacturer and has been tested and certified as for its intended use.

Minimum safety screen criteria

The following are the minimum criteria that the City Council would normally expect a safety screen to meet in order for it to be placed on the list of safety screens approved to be installed in vehicles.  The safety Screen shall, as a minimum:

  • Be tested to the relevant EC requirement for an original equipment type approval test covering interior fittings.
  • Be certified by the vehicle manufacturer that it does not compromise the integrity of the vehicle structure.
  • Be approved by Mira (MIRA is recognised as a leading independent product engineering, testing, consultancy and certification organisation)   [or other comparable independent product engineering, testing, consultancy and certification organisation] for use in the UK.
