People and communities Volunteer with the Highways Access Group

We are looking for passionate, paid volunteers who have lived experience or expertise in disability or inclusive design, to influence highways designs to make Manchester an accessible city for everyone.

As part of the Highways Access Group, you will be breaking down the barriers that a disabled person may face in Manchester and be part of the conversation with Council Officers to design out these barriers. The group provides the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge whilst connecting with others in this friendly, supportive environment.

We are looking for people who:

  • Have lived experience of disability, for example a parent /carer of someone with a disability, a veteran
  • Have expertise in inclusive design
  • Live or work in Manchester

What we would ask you to do

Your role on the Highways Access Group will involve:

  • providing advice and expertise on accessible design for each highway scheme
  • identifying any challenges / barriers that a scheme poses and aim to provide advice on alternative solutions to improve accessible design.

Successful applicants will be required to attend a 2-hour virtual meeting on the second Wednesday of each month, where two Highways schemes will be presented. Members will be asked to review the presentations in advance and provide feedback on what could be improved in the designs in relation to inclusive design. You will need access to a device to be able to logon to the meetings which are hosted on Microsoft Teams.
