Our collection of admission registers from 1870 to 1916 are now available on findmypast. You can look at what we have on microfilm (marked MF) on the ground floor of the Central library. Those not on microfilm can be accessed using our search room (note the reference number starting with GB), you will need to make an appointment

Manchester Jews' School (ref Archives GB127.M66/126)

Manchester Hebrew Association has founded religious classes in 1838. By 1842 they established a school at Halliwell Street, Cheetham and moved to Cheetham Hill Road in 1851. In 1869 it moved to a larger building in Derby Street, Cheetham, and became known as the Manchester Jews' School. We have admission registers for:

  • Infants 1883 to 1927 (MF 3010)
  • Boys 1874 to 1949 (until 1916 only, MF 3010)
  • Girls 1876 to 1944 (until 1922 only, MF 3010)

Cheetwood Junior and Infant School, Cheetham (ref GB127.M66/91)

Opened in 1889, the school had a large number of Jewish pupils, who made up four-fifths of the school population by 1907. We have admission registers for:

  • Boys 1920 to 1930 (until 1925 only, MF 3023)
  • Senior Boys 1930 to 1942
  • Junior (mixed) 1930 to 1955
  • Infants 1913 to 1955 (until 1928 only, MF 3023)

Heath Street School, Cheetham (ref GB127.M66/34)

The school opened in 1894 in an area with a large Jewish population. Hebrew was taught at the school from February 1915. We have admission registers for:

  • Seniors (mixed) 1906 to 1926 (MF 3022)
  • Boys department, central school, 1926 to 1937
  • Girls department, central School, 1924 to 1933
  • Senior girls 1930 to 1937
  • Senior (mixed) 1937 to 1973

Southall Street School, Strangeways (ref GB127.M66/82)

The school opened in 1871 and in May 1891 a Jewish mixed department was opened. We have admission registers for:

  • Jewish infants 1896 to 1930 (until 1925, MF 3024)
  • Jewish boys 1883 to 1912 (until 1925, MF 3024-3025)
  • Jewish girls 1892 to 1925 (MF 3024-3025)
  • Senior mixed department 1925 to 1930
  • Central school mixed 1924 to 1929
  • Senior Girls 1930 to 1942
  • Junior mixed and infant 1939 to 1953
  • Senior mixed 1942 to 1948
