Parking restriction options

Permit holders-only parking bays:

This is a parking bay with road markings and traffic signs that allow only vehicles with a valid permit to park.

Features:

  • only permit holders can park in the parking bay during times of operation
  • residents and businesses included within the scheme would be eligible to apply for permits
  • visitor permits are available at a cost to the resident; these allow a visitor to park in marked bays
  • parking bays can only be introduced where it is safe to do so and where access would not restrict other road users. (Roads that are too narrow for parking bays on both sides may need a single/double yellow line opposite the parking bay to maintain access.)
  • vehicles can only park within the marked bays
  • permits do not guarantee a parking space.

Limited waiting bays:

These are marked parking bays that allow any vehicles to park for a short period of time. The same vehicle cannot return to the same parking bay until a further period of time has passed. Exceptions can be made for permit holders.

Features:

  • short-stay parking can be accommodated without the need for a permit
  • possible exception for permit holders to allow them long-stay parking
  • parking bays can only be introduced where it is safe and wouldn’t restrict access or other road users. (Roads that are too narrow for parking bays on both sides may need a single/double yellow line opposite the parking bay to maintain access.)
  • permits do not guarantee a parking space.

Pay and display bays:

These are marked parking bays that allow time-limited parking in exchange for payment during operational hours. There can be exceptions made for vehicles displaying a valid permit so that no payment is required and the time limit for waiting doesn’t apply.

Permit holders only ‘past this point’:

This is a road or part of a road where only vehicles displaying a valid permit can park during times of operation. There are no marked parking bays; instead, the restrictions would be defined with entry/exit signs.

Features:

  • all vehicles, including visitors, parked on-street during the hours of operation would need to display a permit
  • vehicles with permits can park anywhere on the road, as long as it is in accordance with the Highway Code.

Daytime waiting restrictions:

This is shown by a single yellow line and a sign showing the days and times vehicles cannot park. This applies to all vehicles (except Blue Badge holders) regardless of whether or not they display a permit. The absence of parked vehicles during peak periods can improve safety and reduce congestion that could obstruct access.

All-day waiting restrictions:

This is displayed by a double yellow line marked on the road that signifies no vehicle is allowed to park at any time. This is used where parking at any time could be unsafe and cause congestion that could obstruct general and emergency access.
