We have a responsibility to enforce a range of legislation. Our Corporate Enforcement Policy explains how we achieve this.
The policy is intended to protect the public, the environment, consumers and workers through:
- enforcing the law in a fair, equitable and consistent manner
- assisting broadly compliant businesses to meet their legal obligations
- taking firm action against those who flout the law or act irresponsibly.
We will exercise our regulatory activities in a way which is:
- proportionate
- accountable
- consistent
- transparent
- targeted.
The policy applies to all services with enforcement duties although it should be noted that some services have specific legislative guidance and regulations which set out the enforcement requirements in these services.
Promoting compliance and tackling non compliant behaviour by individuals and businesses contributes to creating places where people want to live, work and socialise, and supports our efforts to deliver best value services.
In certain circumstances we will publicise examples of non compliance to raise awareness and increase compliance.
