Electric vehicle (EV) cable channel pilot
We’re trialling electric vehicle (EV) cable channels to help people to charge vehicles on the road. The cable channels run across the pavement and flush to its surface. This helps to keep cables out of the way of footpath users. The channel holds one charging cable.
The results of this pilot will shape the next phase of installations.
This pilot is for 45 cable channel installations. We’re accepting applications until 30 June 2025 or when we reach 45 installations. Whichever comes first. There's still time to apply.
If you have access to off-street parking, you will not be eligible for this pilot.
Cost and ownership
The cost per household will be from £949 to £1,424.50. It depends on the type of pavement surface outside your property. We'll only ask you to pay when our highways team have confirmed the location is suitable. The cost includes installation, maintenance, removal and any reinstallation.
The cable channel will be owned by the local highway authority.
Having a cable channel does not provide guaranteed parking at the address.
Grants
You may be able to get a grant to pay for the costs if one of these describes you:
- You live in a property in council tax band A, B or C.
- You have a private hire vehicle or taxi licenced by Manchester City Council.
- You’re a blue badge holder (it must be in date).
- You’re part of a Motability Scheme.
- You’re an essential driver for the Council, live in Manchester and on pay grade 8 or lower.
How to apply
You must already have an EV before you apply.
