Consultations and surveys Northern Quarter area 4: Shudehill and Withy Grove consultation

Results

In the latest round of consultation for this scheme, 100 people completed the consultation form on the Council’s website, while others emailed comments, or attended online public engagement events. Numerous briefings were also held with local businesses and other stakeholders.

Most of the respondents travel through the Shudehill and Withy Grove area for business and leisure, either walking, cycling or using public transport.

Of those who responded:

  • 78 percent think that the proposed changes will be a good thing for the city.
  • Around 74 per cent thought that the changes would be a good or very good thing for pedestrians,
  • while 80 per cent felt that the proposed changed would be positive for cyclists,
  • 65 per cent thought they would be good for local businesses
  • and 77 per cent through they would benefit residents.

Some concerns raised included the width of cycle lanes – this is limited by the need to provide space for 2-way bus movements on Withy Grove. There were also complaints about the detail provided on maps – this was to allow people to comment on outline proposals before final designs were completed, and also to allow time for modelling around traffic movements at junctions. People also asked that cyclists be physically separated from traffic – this will be done wherever possible.

Changes will be made to the design based on feedback received during the consultation, and when a final design is prepared, further communications will be carried out to share this through local mailings and social media, and it will be available on our website.
