Find out if a road or alleyway is private or publicly maintained

There are three ways to find out whether or not a road or alleyway is privately maintained.

1. Find out the maintenance responsibility of your street from the free online National Street Gazetteer (updated monthly)

2. View the street ownership records by appointment only (this is a free service.) Email your request to roadinformationsearches@manchester.gov.uk

3. Ask us for the information: we will send you a local plan with more detail. This costs £150. You can ask five specific questions with your request, or ask additional questions for £38 per question (inclusive of VAT).

Whichever method you use, you will only be able to find out if the road or alley is privately-owned/maintained or council-owned/maintained: we can't tell you who owns a private road. To do this contact the Land Registry.
