Roads & transport Great Ancoats Street

Great Ancoats Street is due to benefit from improvement works starting in Summer 2019.

The work is expected to last between 12 and 14 months and while it's carried out the highway will remain open, but with reduced capacity in each direction.

The changes will benefit the physical environment of the road, which is currently perceived as a harsh boundary between the City Centre and the Ancoats neighbourhood.

When the work is completed the key benefits will include:

  • a more pleasant environment, with improved street furniture and tree planting where possible
  • better and safer pedestrian crossings
  • improved access and connectivity between the City Centre, Ancoats and New Islington, helping to support the local economy and creating an attractive and accessible area
  • new toucan crossings for shared pedestrian and cycling use.
