Roads and transport Play Street Scheme

Play Streets are a chance for residents to close their road for community activity. We can close a road for up to three hours from 10am to 4pm. You can apply for up to three road closures per year. The community events could be:

  • Children playing in the street
  • An opportunity for residents to get to know each other
  • A national event like Clean Air Day

Applications will need to confirm:

1.     That all residents and businesses in the area are aware of the event. This can be a letter to everyone concerned.

2.     Residents will act as stewards to ensure road safety. There may be a traffic management plan required depending on the area.

3.     Residents will put the official road closure notice on street furniture in the area. They should do this a week before the event. They will also put it on the signs and bins used to close the road on the day of the event.

You should give six weeks’ notice when you apply for the street closure.

Approval of your application will depend on the size of the street and on other roads and bus routes.

You can Apply for a Play Street Temporary Road Closure by completing a form. The form will ask for contact details so that we can get back to you.

We want to grant as many applications as we can. But not all will be successful.
