Trinity Way / Great Ducie Street junction pedestrian safety improvements
From 2 June until the middle of July 2025, we’ll be working on improving pedestrian safety at the junction of Great Ducie Street and Trinity Way.
Currently, there are only three controlled crossings at this busy junction. The fourth on the west side opposite the Kickair trampoline centre is uncontrolled.
The work seeks to address this, while also redesigning the crossing to reflect the routes that the public actually take. The central island will be widened to allow for more pedestrians at any one time while maintaining their safety.
We’ll also be improving the junction on the east side of the junction, opposite the Manchester College campus. The current crossing becomes crowded with pedestrians, particularly at peak times. The new, wider design and relocation allows for an increased number of pedestrians to cross safely.
Overall, the improvements to the junction consist of:
-
Redesigned and controlled pedestrian crossing on the west side of the junction
-
A left turn ban of northbound traffic on Great Ducie Street to support the pedestrian phase of the controlled crossing (a build out of the kerb will prevent left turns)
-
Improved controlled pedestrian crossing on the east side of the junction
-
Guard rails and bollards to prevent pavement parking on the kerb island near to New Bridge Street and Mirabel Street
-
Road markings and signage will be updated to reflect the changes.
Work will be undertaken by our contractor, Rosgal PLC. It will be done Monday to Friday, between 8am to 5pm.
Traffic management will be in place while this work is completed. We will ensure that there is always one lane for traffic open, and one pedestrian crossing available to ensure that the area can still be used during the improvements. The lane closures will only be in place during off-peak hours 9.30am to 3.30pm.
To enable traffic and pedestrians to move safely during upcoming events at the arena, the traffic management for this scheme will be removed on the following dates:
-
14/15 June for Parklife
-
21/22 June for Pulp / Peter Kay
