What you need to apply

Resident permit

You will be issued with an e-permit. 

If you change your vehicle you need to log in and request a registration swap whilst providing supporting evidence . You can renew your permit via your online account.

For a resident permit you need:

  • An active email address,
  • Proof of address – for example a copy of a recent utility or council tax bill or rent agreement and;
  • Proof of ownership – copy of logbook (V5C vehicle registration certificate) or insurance documents or; If you have a Company vehicle you will need to provide, a letter from your employer stating that you are entitled to bring the vehicle home and park it on the road at your address overnight. The letter should also confirm all vehicle details.

Visitor permit

You can apply for a separate permit that allows visiting vehicles to park. You will be issued with an e-permit. You must change the vehicle registration for the visiting vehicle within your permit account. Only one of your visiting vehicles may be active on the permit at any one time.

A charge of £45 per year is made for a visitor permit. 

Only one visitor will be allowed to park in the permit area at a time.

For a visitor permit you need:

  • Proof of address – for example a copy of recent utility or council tax bill or rent agreement.

Business and Business visitor permits

Businesses may apply for a business permit per vehicle registered at the business address.  These are valid for one year and will be issued as an e-permit. You can renew your permit via your online account. 

For a Business Permit you need:

  • Proof of business address – for example a copy of your current business rates or a recent utility bill and;
  • Proof of vehicle registration – a copy of the 'log book' (V5C vehicle registration certificate).

Business visitor permit

Businesses can get one transferable business visitor permit valid for one year at a cost of £45. 

You will be issued with an e-permit. You must change the vehicle registration for the visiting vehicle within your permit account. Only one of your visiting vehicles may be active on the permit at any one time.

You can apply and renew your permit via your online account.

For a business visitor permit you need:

  • Proof of business address – for example a copy of your current business rates or a recent utility bill.

Carer's permit

You may get a free transferable permit for someone caring for you at your home. This a paper permit and must be displayed in the carer's vehicle and returned to you before they leave. 

If you lose your carer's permit you can apply for a free replacement. If it is lost a second time there is a charge of £45 for a replacement. 

For a carer permit you need all of the following:

  • Carer's Assessment – copy of a letter showing that you or your carer have had a council carer assessment.
  • Carer's Allowance letter – copy of letter confirming that you get Carer's Allowance.
  • Proof of address – for example a copy of recent utility or council tax bill or rent agreement.

Apply for a Carer's permit

Student permits

Students who live in the scheme area and who require a vehicle to complete their studies (for example, a student nurse on placement at a remote hospital) can apply for an annual permit free of charge. One permit provides for one student vehicle, valid for the academic year (September to June).

For a student visitor permit you need:

  • An active email address,
  • Proof of address – for example a copy of a recent utility or council tax bill or tenancy agreement. Note, a minimum 10-months tenancy contract must be provided.
  • Proof of vehicle - copy of logbook (V5C vehicle registration certificate) or insurance documents
  • Proof of vehicle requirement – for example a letter or course certificate issued by the University confirming the student's vehicle is needed in order to complete their studies/placement.
  • Driving Licence - applicant needs a valid driving licence
