Parking Ancoats, Miles Platting and Collyhurst Residents Parking Scheme

Proposed residents parking scheme

We're proposing a resident parking scheme for Ancoats, Miles Platting and Collyhurst.

These areas have a lot of residential properties. And more are being built to provide new homes. But parking can be a problem for residents, especially in Miles Platting and Ancoats.

People driving into Manchester use areas like Ancoats to park and walk into the city. This added traffic and parking makes life difficult for residents and local businesses. And the opening of the Co-op Live Arena at the Etihad Campus will bring more cars into the area.

Residents told us these issues affect them daily and have a negative impact on their lives. And we’ve had feedback from traffic and parking surveys and local councillors. We know we need to act now.

What we want to do

We plan to create zones that protect the needs of residents and local businesses. We want to:

  • give residents somewhere to park close to their homes.
  • encourage drivers to park with more consideration for other street users.
  • reduce the number of people using the area to park and walk into the city.

Zone rules will depend on the main issues in the area. And they'll need to work with schemes already used in neighbouring areas. The zones will join up with the existing city centre and Eastlands parking schemes.

Streets will look much as they do now. There will be new signs making streets 'resident only' parking. And there will be short and medium stay parking bays (for visitors without permits).

We want to improve life for residents. To do that, we must work on the problems caused by parking. It’s not a problem for all streets. But people driving into Manchester will look for other places to park. And we don't want to move the problem to these streets. For that reason, the proposed scheme will apply across the whole area.

Permits will be available for visitors and people employed in the area so they can still park.

Changes like these must go through long design, consultation and legal processes. We know parking is a big problem for many people living in these areas. So, we're looking at what work we can start earlier. For example, adding single and double yellow lines. We'll share our ideas about this before we begin.

We'll consult the public about the first designs for the scheme in May 2024. There will be several ways to share your feedback – using our website, email and post. We'll have special events to get feedback in person. And we'll visit local businesses, schools and community groups to hear your views.
