Roads and transport Winter services - roads

Gritting

It's not possible for the gritters to spread salt on every road and pedestrian area due to budget and time limits. We need to concentrate our services on main roads, most bus routes and routes to important emergency, medical and public facilities.

For other areas, we've provided over 200 salt bins around the city allowing residents to salt public highway and pedestrian areas.  The salt in salt bins should not be used on private property, such as driveways.

  • Roads - we regularly grit about 704km of Manchester's roads: we include the main A and B roads, bus routes, busy commuter routes and other busy roads serving hospitals, schools, the airport, large employment and industrial centres, and some local access roads; and
  • Pavements - we treat over 50km of pavements, including busy pedestrian areas in the city centre, district shopping centres and other pavements linking transport interchanges etc. Pavements are only treated when the forecast is for prolonged periods of ice or snow.
  • Segregated cycle ways - we also treat our main segregated cycle ways using a liquid de-icer.

We do not grit any private land: that is the responsibility of the landowner.

See all the roads, pavements, cycle paths and cycle ways that we grit.

You can also follow our 'gritter twitter' feed @MCCGritters1 or see the feed on our winter service information page for updates on when we're gritting.
