Managing the work - Phase 2

2025 Update

On 3 February 2025, work on improvements for the Northeast Gateway will begin and is estimated to last until October 2025. This scheme will improve cycling and walking facilities in the Northeast area by improving access to local centres for cyclists and pedestrians. The designs will give better access to the city centre, joining up and improving public spaces, as well as link the New Islington Metrolink with the proposed M62 Express Bus Corridor.

Improvements will consist of:

  • Construction of new footways and traffic island on Rochdale Road 
  • New controlled pedestrian crossing on Thompson Street east of Cross Keys Street 
  • A CYCLOPS style cycle and pedestrian junction at Thompson Street/ Rochdale Road/ Ludgate Hill 
  • New uncontrolled crossing points on side streets of Rochdale Road and Thompson Street 
  • New segregated cycleways on Rochdale Road and Thompson Street 
  • Relocated bus stops on Rochdale Road, south of Bendix Street and north of Clive Street 
  • Relocated bus stops on Thompson Street, opposite Mason Street 
  • New signalised crossing at the junction of Rochdale Road and Gould Street 
  • Removal of parking on Thompson Street 
  • New signalised junction at Rochdale Road and Gould Street 
  • Closure of Ludgate Hill to motorised vehicles
  • Construction of new footways and traffic islands on Oldham Road near to Thompson Street 
  • A CYCLOPS style cycle and pedestrian junction at Oldham Road, Thompson Street and Sherratt Street 
  • New controlled pedestrian crossing on Thompson Street, east of Cross Keys Street 
  • New uncontrolled crossing points at side roads along Thompson Street 
  • New segregated cycleways on Oldham Road, Thompson Street and Sherratt Street 
  • Relocated bus stop on Thompson Street near to the junction with Oldham Road
  • New controlled crossing on Old Mill Street

We will continue to work with other developments in the area to reduce disruption to residents.
