Environmental problems After a flood

Health and wellbeing after a flood

Floodwater may contain sewage, animal waste and other contaminants. However, the biggest health hazard caused by a flood comes from the stress and strain of the event itself.

  • It’s normal to feel anxious if you have been affected by flooding. See the National Flood Forum advice on coping with flooding.
  • Cover open cuts and wounds on exposed skin with waterproof plasters.
  • You should attend any scheduled medical appointments unless advised otherwise.
  • If you feel unwell, go to your doctor immediately. Tell them your home was flooded.
  • Call 111 if you have non-urgent health concerns. Only go to Accident and Emergency if it's a life-threatening emergency.
